The Magic of Sisterhood

opening excerpt

On Thursday morning, prying myself from under the blankets, I peered with tired eyes at the surroundings. Everything looked the same as it was the night before, and the night before that. I could scarcely recall either. Sleep was fleeting, and the pounding of my pulse was too fast and too loud. Unfamiliar lodgings made me yearn for my own bed.

“Get up and get out,” I muttered. “You’re on vacation…remember?” I made my way into the kitchenette and hit the ‘on’ button to start coffee. Fumbling for the pull cord on the blinds I drew them open. It was sunny. The tall palms swayed gently – a perfect day for a dip in the pool and catch a few rays.

In my suitcase were a new bathing suit and a sarong-style wrap skirt. The hat I’d brought would have elicited a snort of amusement if my fashion-conscious sister had ever seen it. I still thought it was cute but decided against wearing it.

Two fresh beach towels were already folded over the chair and I had a book to keep me occupied.

After a few nibbles of breakfast, I still felt reluctant. “No point staying indoors when the weather’s so nice. You’re on vacation…remember?”

Upstairs in the loft, other luggage stood side by side. I pulled the larger of the two suitcases onto the bed and unzipped it. The sun hat inside was a better style, designed for travel. It rolled flat but opened to a wide brim that offered both protection from the sun and much needed privacy. I donned my suit and wrapped the skirt around me; then grabbed both towels, the hat, a water bottle from the fridge, room keys, and my book.
