Katie DeBoer
Katie DeBoer,writer
Katie DeBoer is a shoes-off kind of dancer. She lives in Millet, Alberta, on Treaty Six territory, with her husband, Raymond. She has spent the past twelve years as a public school teacher, specializing in supporting students with learning disabilities and complex needs. A lifelong learner fuelled by curiosity, she is always asking questions—about people, systems, stories, and herself. When she isn’t in the classroom, Katie can be found adventuring around the world or exploring closer to home on walks with her two dogs. Whether it be Indonesia or rural Alberta, Katie finds the most joy in delighting in the small details and quiet beauty around her.
Luke — Volume 10, Issue 3
Katie DeBoer enters the classroom with clear eyes and hard-won honesty in her personal essay, Luke. A portrait of one student and the year he hijacks, it is also something larger: a reckoning with the limits of patience, the myth of the problem child, and what it costs to choose connection over contempt.
