A Question of Engagement: What Happened to our Write Prompt Challenge Shortlist?

As time has passed, engagement in our quarterly write-prompt challenge has waned. While we believe it is a valuable exercise for all who enter, there comes a time when you have to ask if this thing has run its course.

Are you over it?

Our last challenge, one that came with a beautiful image sure to spark the imagination of many, was met with abysmal participation. One of our judges proposed that it is, perhaps, this new season of “re-opening” that has pulled people away from their keyboards and out into the three-dimensional world that has been closed for so long. I hope she’s right.

I would be sad to shut down this opportunity. This contest has established itself as a stepping stone for some - bringing about first publications for new authors - and that’s not something we want to take away.

The June contest brought in only three entries. And of those three, there was only one we felt strong enough to move forward. This was not an easy decision and we appreciate the graciousness with which the other contestants accepted our choice.

Three entries from the thousands of creative souls who are part of this Blank Spaces community sends us a strong message, one we really hope we’re misinterpreting.

A new contest has been posted. We’re going to try this one more time. This is your opportunity to try your hand at the challenge and to prove to us that this is a valuable task worthy of participation.

Should numbers continue to be low, we will have to make the tough decision to shut down this competition. At least for now.

How can you help?

Share the contest with your creative friends.

Post the link on your social media pages.

Give it a try yourself! You never know what an image can spark. Some of the greatest writing we’ve published has been from this contest. Some of those stories have gone on to be nominated for short fiction awards. That could be you!

Now take a moment and check out that winning story, a story our judges called “heartfelt, wholesome, and motivational.

We are very open to your suggestions on ways to better promote this contest. Or perhaps you have different opportunities you’d like to see us offer. Use the comment window below to share your ideas. Thank you for being part of this community!
