Six Make the Shortlist for our March Writing Contest
We are so pleased to announce that SIX writers have made the shortlist for our March Write Prompt Challenge.
We try to choose images that can take authors in countless directions, and the photo of a barber shop was no different. These writers approached the provided image with wonderfully unique views that were clever and surprising.
Congratulations to Rachel Barnes, Christopher David Brown, Don Herald, Ruth Kennedy, Angela Sawyer, and Jennifer L. Turney — we wish you well as you go on to the final stage of judging!
Rachel Barnes | shortlisted for the story, 'Liminal Space
Rachel Barnes is a Canadian speculative fiction writer whose work explores grief, identity, and the dark underbelly of humanity. She lives in Corner Brook, Newfoundland with her 18-year-old tuxedo cat, Mr. Whiskers.
Christopher David Brown| shortlisted for the story, 'Trust'
Christopher is recently retired from a couple of careers writing dry, formulaic technical reports for government and business. He has been writing creatively for less than a year, and lives in Grande Prairie Alberta with his wife Daphne and hairy child Bearie.
Don Herald | shortlisted for the story, 'Grant The Barber'
Don Herald of Peterborough, Ontario, enjoys writing about quirky characters, relationships, and odd situations he encounters in his daily life. A natural and entertaining storyteller, Don has performed his stories before large and small audiences. Upon his retirement from social work and corporate training in 2012, he began writing and has successfully published some of his short stories online in Canada, the United States, and Great Britain.
Ruth Kennedy| shortlisted for the story, 'My Favourite Sports'
Ruth is anemerging writer living in Ottawa. As an active member of Ottawa Independent Writers and Haiku Canada, Ruth has enjoyed having her work published in the annual anthologies of both organizations. Her poetry, fiction, and essays have been published in the Haiku Canada Review, The Globe and Mail, Bywords.ca, cattails journal, and Dreamer’s Creative Writing.
Angela Sawyner| shortlisted for the story, 'Itch to Cut'
With a motto of 'everyone has a story to tell', Angela spends their days writing and exploring how narratives impact us (when they're not spending time with their dog).
Jennifer L. Turney| shortlisted for the story, 'First Times'
One of my first stories ever published was in Blank Spaces Magazine. A lot of my stories come from real conversations, real memories with people that inspired me or made me smile. When I'm not looking for a new hot sauce or trying to grow my own peppers, I'm happy to be at home with a book and my best cat-friend Brian. I think there is inspiration everywhere and in every thing if we keep ourselves open to the moment.
Watch for our announcement of the top three in the coming weeks!
